Pease Construction was awarded the contract to build the new Federal Way 320th Library and the existing building closed July 21 for demolition work. There will not be a temporary library site since the Federal Way Library is located nearby and can serve patrons during construction. Construction is anticipated to last one year.

June 2012
Bid proposals were received in mid-June and a contractor will soon be awarded the project. Construction is anticipated to start in Summer 2012.

May 2012
The planning process continues and architects are finalizing the project designs and plans. KCLS anticipates bidding the project in June 2012.

April 2012
The planning and design process continues and project documents are being finalized. KCLS anticipates going out to bid in June 2012.

March 2012
KCLS and the consultant team continue to respond to comments from the City of Federal Way as part of the permit process. KCLS will issue bid documents as soon as a permit is pending.

February 2012
The planning process continues for a new replacement library at the current site. KCLS and the consultant team are responding to comments from the city in order to finalize the permit and bid package. Once a permit is received, KCLS will issue bid documents.

January 2012
The project consultants continue to work on the final phase of design and construction documents for the new 15,000 square foot replacement library at the current site. To start the permit process, drawings were submitted to the City of Federal Way in early January.

December 2011
KCLS has authorized work to begin on the final phase of design and construction documents for the new 15,000 square foot replacement library at the current site. The project consultants have submitted the site plan and current design plans to the City for permit review. Cost estimates are currently within budget.

November 2011
Work continues on planning for a new 15,000 square foot library. KCLS’ consultants have submitted the site and design plans to the City for permit review. Cost estimates are currently within the allocated budget.

Work continues on the planning and design process for a new 15,000 square foot library, as well as landscaping and parking improvements. The preliminary plans for the interior design and layout are currently being reviewed and a cost-estimate is anticipated by mid-November.

September 2011
Schematic design has been completed for the new 15,000 square foot library and parking and the project is now in the design development phase. Initial discussions were held with the City of Federal Way to ensure compliance with city codes.

August 2011
The project team has completed the schematic design process and is now working on the design development phase in preparation for a new 15,000 square foot replacement library at the current library site. Plans include additional parking at the site.

Project consultants with SRG Partnership continue to review and refine the project designs for a new replacement library on the current site. Designs will be presented to the public at a second public meeting on Tuesday, July 12, 6:30pm at the Federal Way 320th Library. SRG Partnership will also present the schematic designs to the KCLS Board of Trustees in July.

May 2011
The project consultants are working to refine the preliminary designs for a new replacement library on the current site and schematic design is expected to be completed in June 2011. A detailed interior space plan will be presented to the public at a second public meeting in the summer of 2011.

April 2011
A public meeting on April 5 was well-attended and community members were enthusiastic about the proposed site plans for a new replacement library on the current site. The project consultants are now working with KCLS staff to refine the location of the building on the existing site. More detailed interior space plans will be presented at the next public meeting, which will be held in the summer of 2011.

March 2011
Planning continues for a new replacement library on the current site. KCLS representatives have reviewed the Site Study Report prepared by SRG Partnership and other consultants and preliminary building size and location are being reviewed. A public meeting to encourage residents to review and offer input about the current design for the library is scheduled for April 5, 6:30pm, at the Federal Way 320th Library. February 2011
Planning continues for a new replacement library on the current site. KCLS representatives met with the project architects to discuss site plan alternatives and a site analysis is currently being conducted. A public meeting to solicit input from community members will be scheduled once design work is underway.

January 2011
KCLS’ project consultants are developing plans for a new replacement library on the current site. A topographic survey of the property is scheduled and a traffic study will soon be completed.  

December 2010
Project consultants are gathering information to evaluate the feasibility of a new 15,000 square foot replacement library at the current library site. A topographic survey of the property is underway and a traffic study will be completed by the end of January.

After selecting SRG Partnership to assist with the site planning and design process for the new library, the consultants are proceeding with gathering documentation from the City of Federal Way to better understand the City's development process.

October 2010
After interviewing several architectural firms on October 4, SRG Partnership was selected to assist with the site planning and design process for the new Library. The project schedule will be drafted once a contract is signed.

September 2010
KCLS is proceeding with interviewing several architectural firms after 20 firms responded to a solicitation for a consultant team to assist with the site planning and design process for the new library. The interview panel will include representatives from KCLS’ Administration and Board of Trustees, the City of Federal Way and two citizens from the Federal Way area. Interviews will be held at the Federal Way Library on October 4.

August 2010
Twenty architectural firms responded to KCLS’ solicitation for a consultant team to assist with the site planning and design process for the new library. Representatives from selected firms will soon be invited for interviews by a panel that will include representatives from Federal Way. The consultant team will be part of a project team comprised of community members, library staff and a KCLS Board Member, which will be tasked with reviewing the current library site and assessing options for the library.

July 2010
Plans are underway to assemble a project team comprised of community members, library staff and a KCLS Board Member to review the current library site and assess other nearby options for construction of the new library. To assist with the process, KCLS staff will advertise for a consultant team to help with the site planning and design work.

May 2006
The City of Federal Way expressed further interest in developing a library presence in the downtown area to supplement the library service being delivered by Federal Way Regional and the Federal Way 320th libraries. They are trying to find partners, such as KCLS and Highline Community College, to consider a joint development downtown (in addition to the current libraries). KCLS agreed to explore this possibility and find out what a partnership with Highline Community College might look like. Highline has a Library Technician training program and there may be some interest in having a library outlet as part of the program.

April 2006
KCLS staff attended a Federal Way City Council meeting about the possible relocation of the Federal Way 320th Library to the transit center site. Several people that attended the board meeting expressed their opposition to relocating the library. Staff members explained KCLS’ position on the issue and reminded everyone of the scheduled public meeting on this topic the following week.

The Federal Way City Council voted unanimously at their April 18 meeting that KCLS should not pursue the site next to the Transit Center downtown. They acknowledged initiating the discussion with KCLS and Sound Transit, and asked that KCLS and the City continue to look at the configuration of library services in their area so that all Federal Way residents have access to library services.

At their April 25, 2006 meeting, the King County Library System Board of Trustees unanimously voted not to pursue the relocation of the Federal Way 320th Library to the Sound Transit site. This action was based on an evaluation of the existing location and Sound Transit site utilizing the Board-approved Site Selection Policy and the information gathered during a public meting on Wednesday, April 12.

March 2006
In follow-up to discussion at the past Board meeting related to the potential relocation of the Federal Way 320th Library, another public meeting has been scheduled to gather input about the this option. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 12, 6:30pm at the City of Federal Way’s Council Chambers. Postcards are being sent to all Federal Way residents, flyers and posters will be posted in all nearby libraries and local community groups will be notified. The City Council has also requested that KCLS attend a work session regarding this issue on April 4, 2006.

February 2006
The option for a future relocation of the Federal Way 320th Library to the Sound Transit Bus Terminal and Transit Garage area continues to be assessed. Sound Transit staff is preparing appraisals and crafting a purchase offer for KCLS to consider in the near future. An additional public meeting to gather public input was deemed appropriate to better inform the KCLS Board of Trustees prior to any decision being made about the future location of the Federal Way 320th Library.

January 2006
Discussions with Sound Transit continue to ensue. The Sound Transit Board has reviewed the proposed sale of approximately 30,000 square feet of land on the east side of the new parking garage that was built.

November 2005
KCLS and Sound Transit continue to discuss relocating the Federal Way 320th Library to the new transit center site. The Transit Oriented Development Garage includes 1,200 parking stalls and a dedicated bus/carpool exit to and from I -5. The vicinity address is 23rd Ave South and South 316th. Negotiations will need to be expedited to meet Sound Transit’s development calendar.

October 2005
A public meeting was held on October 13 to discuss the idea of relocating the Federal Way 320th Library. Representatives from Sound Transit, city of Federal Way and KCLS discussed the concept and led discussion on the proposal.

September 2005
