New Burien Library Opens!

If attendance is any indication, residents of Burien are excited about their new library! More than 1,000 people gathered on Saturday, June 13, to celebrate the grand opening of Burien Town Square. The development includes the new 32,000 square foot Burien Library, Burien City Hall, Town Square Park and Urban Partners’ condominium and retail building. The Burien Library and City Hall occupy a shared building, with the library on the lower two floors and the city hall on the third floor.

As people took their seats for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Highline High School High Flying Pirates Marching Band marched down 152nd Street and performed for the crowd. Once the ribbon-cutting was under way, several federal, state and local dignitaries expressed their excitement about the project.

 “It is unique to have the library and city government work together,” said KCLS Director Bill Ptacek. “This is a community project.”

Lucy Krakowiak, a member of both the KCLS Board of Trustees and the Burien City Council, thanked everyone involved with the project.
“I encourage everyone to enjoy the library, city hall, park and residences,” Krakowiak said.

Judge Richard Eadie also addressed the crowd: “This is a wonderful city development; it takes a vision and a long time. Congratulations on the new library… enjoy!”

After the ribbon-cutting ceremony concluded, people were invited to tour the new library. Refreshments were provided inside the library, thanks to the Burien Library Guild. Kettle corn, inflatable toys for children and several musical performances were held outside in the new park throughout the afternoon.
