New Greenbridge Library Opens!

Kids singing
You can’t go wrong with 60 kindergarteners and 20 second graders, especially at a library opening event. To celebrate the opening of the new Greenbridge Library, students from White Center Heights Elementary got the crowd in a festive mood by singing their “apple” song and the “library boogie.”

More than 350 people gathered for the Greenbridge Library and YWCA Learning Center opening celebration on Wednesday, November 5, 11am. The 2,300 square foot Greenbridge Library is located in leased space at the new 10,000 square foot YWCA Learning Center together with classrooms, a computer learning lab and a career development center.

Sue Sherbrooke, YWCA CEO, welcomed everyone to the opening celebration, after which King County Executive Ron Sims addressed the crowd. He read a quote from the philosopher Cicero: “To add a library to a house is to give that house a soul.” Sims went on to say that learning is free at libraries, which are “democracy at its best.”

Ron Sims and Bill Ptacek KCLS Director Bill Ptacek addressed the crowd, saying the idea for the partnership originated about eight years ago when Stephen Norman, with the King County Housing Authority, came to a KCLS Board meeting. Norman asked if KCLS would consider building a library at Greenbridge, to which the KCLS Board said “yes.”

Other dignitaries addressed the crowd, including Norman, YWCA Board Chair Maryann Crissey and Dr. Mona Lake Jones, King County Poet Laureate. Click here to view Dr. Mona Lake Jones’ speech.

Once the doors opened to the new library and learning center, community members were welcomed by Dewey and Sketch and enjoyed refreshments and giveaways as they toured the new facility. Lolo the Clown made balloon animals and entertainment was provided by Los Flacos and Radio Disney.
