Kirkland: Monthly Update Archives
March 2008
Detailed design work is progressing for the expanded and renovated Library. The
consultant team is expected to submit for the building permit in May. Current
plans call for the start of construction to be in October/November 2008.
February 2008
The Ruffcorn Mott Hinthorne Stine design team has completed design development
documents. A public meeting in early February was well attended by the community
and construction is anticipated to start in October 2008. The Park Place Bookstore
will provide temporary Library services until the expansion and renovation is
completed.
January 2008
Providing interim library service in downtown Kirkland during the duration of
construction is being assessed, but many services must be temporarily put on
hold. KCLS has received support and assistance from the City, the Chamber of
Commerce and other community groups in locating potential temporary sites. There
is one viable alternative that may allow us to provide some services in the downtown
area once construction work starts. KCLS hopes to begin construction by the third
quarter of the year. The next public meeting for the Kirkland expansion will
be on February 4.
November 2007
KCLS and the consultant team met with the City of Kirkland staff for
a pre-submittal meeting. KCLS is proceeding with plans to expand the north end of the building as was originally intended when the library was built. The facility is modern enough to be in compliance with most of the current codes and city requirements. KCLS’ consultants also will meet with Sound Transit’s
planning team in order to ensure that the design of the library expansion is
compatible with the design of the nearby Kirkland Transit Center Project.
October 2007
Ruffcorn Mott Hinthorne Stine was selected as the architect firm for the Kirkland Library expansion project. A public meeting was held on October 22 to gather input from the community about their ideas for the expanded facility.
August 2007
Ruffcorn Mott Hinthorne Stine was selected for the Kirkland Library project by
a panel that included a City Planner, a member of the Library Advisory Board
and Board Member Richard Eadie.
September 2005
The City of Kirkland is creating an inventory of public work likely to occur in the vicinity of the library and parking garage. Sound Transit has earmarked funds to develop a transit center on the west side of the library/garage. KCLS confirmed its plans for an addition of up to 5,000-square-feet to the library.
