Kirkland: Monthly Update Archives
December 2009
More than 350 people attended the expanded Kirkland Library opening celebration on Saturday, December 5. Once the doors officially opened, people were invited inside to tour the library and enjoy refreshments, including cookies provided by the Friends of the Library of Kirkland and cupcakes donated by Sweet Cakes. Free kettle corn was offered outside the library and giveaways included coloring books, book marks and ornaments with seeded paper that will grow wildflowers when planted.
November 2009
Library construction is nearing completion, with fixtures and furniture currently being installed. The expanded and renovated library will reopen to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on Saturday, Dec. 5, 10am. Once the doors open, residents are invited to tour the new facility and enjoy refreshments and an afternoon of musical programs and activities.

Construction continues and the project is on schedule, with an opening celebration set for Saturday, December 5, 2009.
September 2009
The Library continues to be under construction and is anticipated to be completed in October. The interior of the library will then be prepared for the library to open to the public on Saturday, December 5, 2009.
August 2009
The Library continues to be under construction and the expansion work is expected to be finished by October. At that point, KCLS staff can begin preparing the interior of the expanded library for the public opening, which is anticipated for early December 2009.

Construction on the library expansion and remodel project continues. Temporary library services are available at Park Place Books in the Park Place Shopping Center.
January 2009
The Library closed Saturday, January 24 in preparation for the remodel and expansion project. The Library will relocate to a temporary site at Parkplace Books and construction will start the first week of February.
December 2008
Kirtley Cole was the successful bidder for the project and contract
negotiations are under way. The project is anticipated to start by mid-January.
Once the library closes, temporary services will be offered at Park Place Books.
November 2008
Bids were received for the Kirkland Library expansion project, several
of which are very reasonable and are close to the projected project budget.
The project will begin in January 2009.
October 2008
The project documents are available for the general contractors’ bid
preparation. Bids for the project are due in November.
September 2008
The review of the building permit documents by city staff is nearing
completion. The project will go out to bid in September, with construction
anticipated to start in late December or early January.
August 2008
City of Kirkland staff has almost completed the review of the building permit
documents. KCLS expects to issue bid documents for the expansion and remodel
in September. Construction work is anticipated to start in late 2008.
July 2008
The architects continue to work on plans and specifications in preparation for
the bidding of the library expansion and remodel project. City of Kirkland staff
is close to completing their review of the permit documents. KCLS will be participating
in the Sound Transit Public Open House on July 23. The architect and KCLS staff
is in contact with Sound Transit to ensure that design of the library expansion
is compatible with the design of the Kirkland Transit Center Project, located
nearby.
June 2008
The plans and specifications for the expanded and renovated Library are in the
construction documents phase. The consultant team is refining the plans to ensure
that construction costs are within allocated funding for the project. The building
permit set is being prepared and is anticipated to be submitted to the City of
Kirkland in June. Construction may start in the fall of 2008.

The design plans for the expanded and renovated Kirkland Library continue
to progress. The consultant team is refining the plans to ensure that the overall
project cost is within the allocated funding. The building permit plans are
being prepared and will be submitted to the City of Kirkland in May. Current
plans call for the start of construction in the Fall of 2008.
March 2008
Detailed design work is progressing for the expanded and renovated Library. The
consultant team is expected to submit for the building permit in May. Current
plans call for the start of construction to be in October/November 2008.
February 2008
The Ruffcorn Mott Hinthorne Stine design team has completed design development
documents. A public meeting in early February was well attended by the community
and construction is anticipated to start in October 2008. The Park Place Bookstore
will provide temporary Library services until the expansion and renovation is
completed.
January 2008
Providing interim library service in downtown Kirkland during the duration of
construction is being assessed, but many services must be temporarily put on
hold. KCLS has received support and assistance from the City, the Chamber of
Commerce and other community groups in locating potential temporary sites. There
is one viable alternative that may allow us to provide some services in the downtown
area once construction work starts. KCLS hopes to begin construction by the third
quarter of the year. The next public meeting for the Kirkland expansion will
be on February 4.
November 2007
KCLS and the consultant team met with the City of Kirkland staff for
a pre-submittal meeting. KCLS is proceeding with plans to expand the north end of the building as was originally intended when the library was built. The facility is modern enough to be in compliance with most of the current codes and city requirements. KCLS’ consultants also will meet with Sound Transit’s
planning team in order to ensure that the design of the library expansion is
compatible with the design of the nearby Kirkland Transit Center Project.

Ruffcorn Mott Hinthorne Stine was selected as the architect firm for the Kirkland Library expansion project. A public meeting was held on October 22 to gather input from the community about their ideas for the expanded facility.

Ruffcorn Mott Hinthorne Stine was selected for the Kirkland Library project by
a panel that included a City Planner, a member of the Library Advisory Board
and Board Member Richard Eadie.
September 2005
The City of Kirkland is creating an inventory of public work likely to occur in the vicinity of the library and parking garage. Sound Transit has earmarked funds to develop a transit center on the west side of the library/garage. KCLS confirmed its plans for an addition of up to 5,000-square-feet to the library.
