Snoqualmie Community Celebrates New Library
Members of the Snoqualmie Community didn’t waste any time in frequenting their new library for the first time. More than 350 people attended the dedication ceremony and open house on the morning of August 1.
Children, adults and teens joined together at the new library
to celebrate the 6,000 square foot community building. As the
crowd
waited for the dedication ceremony to begin, they enjoyed instrumental
music from Rich & Robin Karas and collected complimentary book
bags, notebooks, visors and balloons. Free coffee and pastries
also were enjoyed.
As the ceremony got under way, many people took seats and others crowded around as King County Library System Director Bill Ptacek welcomed everyone to the new library. Dignitaries addressed the crowd during the event, including several KCLS Library Board Members, Snoqualmie Mayor Matt Larson, Snoqualmie Library Advisory Board President Jennifer Spence, Friends of the Snoqualmie Library President Ann Acton and the contractors and architects.
The dedication ceremony concluded with the cutting of the red
ribbon by dignitaries and the opening of the front doors.
Community
members were greeted by Dewey and Sketch when they entered the
library for the first time. As they toured the new facility, harpist
Cynthia Rice Kuni provided background music.
Large windows throughout the new building take advantage of natural lighting and allow for views of the surrounding mountains and neighborhood center. The library interior features a large community room that is able to be separated from the rest of the library by an overhead glass door.
Construction of the $4 million library began in 2005. This is the first new library to be built as part of the $172 million library capital bond.
The following are some statistics from opening day:
- More than 100 children attended the musical program presented by Rich & Robin at 11:30am
- About 50 people attended the Detective Science program presented by Mad Science at 3pm
- More than 160 people attended the Smilin’ Scandinavians Polka Band at 7pm
- 63 people applied for library cards
- 2,182 items were checked out
- 652 items were checked in
- 37 holds were placed
