July 2008
Construction is complete and the library opened to the community on Saturday,
July 26 with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house. More than 200 people
gathered to celebrate the expanded and renovated community building and enjoyed
refreshments, giveaways, music from Suzuki Harp Northwest, entertainment
by Radio Disney and balloon animals created by Lolo the Clown.

September 2007
Construction started on July 16 and the library will be closed for about 10
months. During the closure, KCLS has acquired access at the nearby school property
for the Summer Reading Program. Holds can be picked up at the Des Moines library.
August 2007
Construction started on July 16 with the library now closed for about 10 months.
KCLS has acquired access to the nearby school property for temporary library
operations during the summer months. A temporary trailer for holds pick-up and
materials drop-off was anticipated; however, KCLS was unable to meet permitting
requirements at the City of Des Moines.
June 2007
Public bids were received for the work to expand and renovate this library. The
low bidder was Lease Crutcher Lewis in the amount of $2,532,000. The 4,800-square-foot
expansion of the existing 5,250-square-foot building will be disruptive to normal
public services resulting in the closure of the library for about 10 months staring
July 1. During the closure, KCLS has acquired access to the nearby school property
for a temporary library operation during the summer months. A temporary trailer
will be on site with limited services and hours to receive returns and for holds
pick up.
May 2007
The bids for the Woodmont Library expansion came in at $58,000 more than our estimate. Luckily, KCLS can manage this level of increased cost, especially since the next lowest bid was $900,000 more than the estimate. The Woodmont Library will be closed on July 1 to allow construction to begin. In the interim, Summer Reading activities will be hosted by a nearby elementary school. Minimal library services will be available in an onsite trailer. The new and expanded library should reopen next spring.
April 2007
Construction drawings for this expansion have been reviewed and should be available for public bid in late April. Current plans call for the library to be closed for up to nine months. The 4,800 square foot expansion of the existing 5,250 square foot building will be disruptive to normal public services since the power and other utilities will be disconnected for lengthy periods of time.
January 2007
Permitting is under way for the Woodmont Library expansion (with the City of Des Moines).
December 2006
Design development drawings are complete. The interior color palette is being developed. Bids will go out in the first quarter of 2007 with construction starting in April or early May.
October 2006
The schematic design documents have been completed and the project will go out to bid in the first quarter of 2007.
August 2006
A second public meeting regarding the design of the expanded Woodmont Library was held on August 10. There was almost universal support for the design presented at last month’s Board meeting. We were able to explain to attendees that some elements may have to be scaled back because the current cost estimates are $1.4 million over budget. There was support for foregoing the parking lot expansion as the current lot meets code requirements and could be expanded at a later date.
July 2006
A second public meeting is scheduled for August 10 to review the floor plan, which is in the final stages. Exterior materials are being identified.
June 2006
