Opera Preview: Semele by George Frederic Handel (1685-1759)

This later work (1744) by Handel was originally written as an oratorio and was performed as such for more than 150 years. In the 20th century, opera producers became aware that Semele's melodramatic story and its gorgeous music made it ripe for staging as an opera, which is how it is usually now performed.
