Movies That Matter: Food Injustice in America

Redmond Library

Join us in July for screenings of two award winning films about food injustice in America. Each film in this series will be introduced by film historian, Lance Rhoades.

Thursday, July 11th, 6:30pm, The Garden (2008)

The Garden is a critically acclaimed account of a 14 acre community garden in South Central Los Angeles that was the largest of its kind in the United States. It was started by a dedicated group of community gardeners as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992. Five years ago bulldozers threatened its existence. The movie provides an unflinching look at the struggle between urban farmers who created an oasis in the city and the powerful developer who wanted to evict them to build warehouses.

Thursday, July 25th, 6:30pm, Food Inc. (2008)

Food Inc. is the seminal movie that helped energize the backlash against the processed food industry. It provides an unflattering look inside America's corporate controlled system of food production. Narrated mostly by Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) Food, Inc. shows the dynamics of our "food web" through the perspective of farmers, food workers, and consumers, among others.
