Evergreen Young Adult Book Award FAQ

1. How are the nominees chosen? Can I nominate a title?

Exceptional titles published three years prior to the award date are suggested to the Nominating Committee. For example, titles nominated for the 2009 Evergreen Award were published in 2006; for the 2008 award, in 2005.. These suggestions can be made by anyone: Teachers, students, parents, or librarians. Please send your suggestions to:

Duvall, WA 98019

2. How do I vote on the nominees?

You must be in grades 7 through 12 and have read at least two of the nominees to vote.

Obtain a ballot, either from a participating school or public library, or print a copy from this Web site. Mark your choice and either mail the ballot to the address above, or turn it in to a participating school or public library. In some cases, participating school and public libraries will have in-house ballot posters that you can initial to choose your winner.

Turn in or mail your ballot no later than March 15th

Librarians may email their ballot totals to Kirsten Edwards at kirstedw@kcls.org.  Please include in your email your name, the name of your school or library, the name of each nominee and the total number of votes for each nominee.

3. Where can I get PR materials such as posters and ballots?

You can download copies of the color and the black-and-white posters and the ballots from this Web site. Free copies of these publicity items are also available at the annual Washington Library Association conventions and at the meetings of the sponsoring organization, WashYARG.

4. What are the deadlines?

The deadline for suggesting nominees is December 31st.

How does that work? Take, for example, the 2009 Evergreen Award. The slate of nominees for that year's award was chosen in February 2008, and available for voting on from May 2008 through March 2008. The deadline for suggesting potential additions was therefore December 2007.

The deadline for voting on nominations is March 15th of the year of the Award. Thus the deadline for the 2008 Evergreen Award was March 15, 2008.
