Our Mission
The King County Library System Foundation promotes literacy, learning, and libraries by providing support beyond public funding for initiatives and resources that enable the King County Library System to better serve the needs of our community.

Programs for Our Community

The King County Library System Foundation creates opportunities to bring literacy, learning, and library access to all members of our diverse community. The KCLS Foundation provides the venture capital for library initiatives that address community needs, the funding for value-added programs and resources, and the vision to ensure that our public library system is vibrant, relevant, and central to our lives.

Each year, more than 100,000 children and adults benefit from Foundation-supported programs. Here are some of the programs the KCLS Foundation supports as we strive to create a community of readers:

Ready to Read - Our vision is that all children in our community will be ready to read by their first day of school. This early literacy initiative reaches out to English-speaking and Spanish-speaking parents and caregivers, teaches skills, and offers resources to make reading an important part of family life and of a young child’s development. This initiative also includes Books for Babies, which provides books and reading tips to more than 5,000 low-income parents of newborns in South King County.

Study Zones - Volunteer tutors provide valuable homework help to students at nearly 30 community libraries. Topics include Math, English, Social Studies, History, and Science.

Ready-Set-Read! - Reading skills are vital to academic achievement, especially in the early grades. This program challenges school-age children to set reading goals while establishing the reading habit. For many of these children, the reward – a free book – is their very first book and the start of their own library.

Global Reading Challenge - With a fast and fun interactive game show format, this program engages thousands of young students in 18 school districts. Students form teams, read interesting books, and enjoy the fun as they build reading and retention skills.

Summer Reading Program - Retaining reading skills during school break is important, and each year, more than 35,000 kids participate in activities and earn rewards. In 2008, a special opportunity for preschoolers will be included in the Catch the Reading Bug activities.

Read Three, Get One Free - Thousands of teens participate year-round in this reading program that encourages them to write reviews, share stories, and earn free books. Read Three, Get One Free Summer Edition includes special books and prizes for teen readers.
