Foundation Awards Grants for Early Literacy Programs

The King County Library System Foundation recently awarded $12,575 in matching funds to Friends of the Library groups for special projects.  With support from Friends of the Library and the Foundation, our libraries offer literacy and lifelong learning programs to best serve their local communities.  This year’s programs include:
  •  Books for Babies encourages family reading activities and provides free books to new parents. Public health nurses distribute books and reading tips to low-income parents.  (Auburn, Black Diamond, Burien, Covington, Fairwood, Federal Way Regional, Federal Way 320th, Kent Regional, Maple Valley, Valley View, White Center, and Woodmont Libraries, $5,550)

  • English for Spanish Speakers, activities for parents and children at the Library Connection @ Crossroads, with the goal of encouraging library use and early literacy
    skills. ($3,500)

  • Shake, Rattle & Roll focuses on the vital role music plays in early learning development. Program demonstrates how sharing music with young children builds brain development and encourages communication. (Newport Way Library, $500).
     
  • Read to Me encourages parents to read with preschool children and develop the family reading habit. (Richmond Beach, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, and Bothell Regional Libraries, $1600)

  • Federal Way parents and children in Headstart and early childhood programs can learn early literacy skills and check out library resources in a workshop titled Encourage Your Emerging Reader. (Federal Way 320th Library, $625)

  • A Writers Workshop introduces library resources and encourages pursuit of literary interests. Sessions will be held at the Kenmore Library and Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park. ($800)
