It is a classic seafaring tale containing pirates, kings, ghosts, ships, and of course, a good ending. What do you like/dislike about it? I found it interesting and unique that this book was written in poetic verse. It was easy to read though, but contained a good story. The redemption story of Bruno is an excellent theme, and a very important one. I think this book contains some good lessons. Who would enjoy reading it? People who like seafaring tales. Title: White Fang
By: Jack London
More Info: What is this book about? White Fang is born to a half-wolf, half-dog mother and a one-eyed wolf father. At a young age, White Fang is taken away from his mother and is forced to live with Indians in north Canada. His life is horrid. That is, until Weedon Scott comes into his life! What do you like/dislike about it? I liked the fact that White Fang is happy in the end but in every illustration in rhe book until chapter 17, White Fang looks clinically insane. This tells me that Jack didn't like animals much which is odd in a book about animals! In short, I'm glad that Whire Fang is happy in the end but did it have to take so long? The writers purpose is to "justify the ways of God to men". A very interesting concept, if only it wasn't written in heroic verse. It was very hard to understand and quite boring, but I guess Milton was a sort of "poetic master" so we'll give him some credit. Who would enjoy reading it? Title: How My Private, Personal Journal Became a Bestseller
By: Julia DeVillers
More Info: What is this book about? This book is from an interesting perspective - a fourteen year old's point of view. Although she seems perfectly normal, Jamie soon becomes an all-out star after her journal accidentally gets turned into her writing teacher instead of her original homework. What do you like/dislike about it? I enjoyed the way it put life through the eyes of a fourteen year old. The way DeVillers created a teenage girl with problems, emotion, and fears, makes the reader feel as though she can relate, or even know the girl personally. Though this book does have excellent points and morals, there definitely are cons. First, I was a bit shocked with the language. Why didn't Julia use more wholesome dialogue? Then there's the way her mom and dad were sort of portrayed as "totally uncool." I think the parents should have been more close to their daughter, and more involved after she made her "big break." Who would enjoy reading it? Adolescent girls would most assuredly eat up this book, though girls even older may still enjoy this heartfelt novel. Being overwhelmed by their father's unexpected return, Darcy's younger sister runs away and it is up to Darcy to save her with a little help from friends and family. What do you like/dislike about it? I like that this book shows a lot of strength and will-power for just one person. We all go through similar problems, and I feel we are all able to deal with them head-on. Who would enjoy reading it? Anyone who enjoys a book of one person's courage and strength to deal with different problems at once. Review written by: Sam, age 17, grade 12

Title: Black and White
By: Paul Volponi
More Info: What is this book about? Marcus is black, Eddie's white, and they are best friends. Both are stars on the basketball and football teams, and since they are so tight, they're called black and white. When Eddie and Marcus need money, they decide to do stickups with Eddie's grandfather's gun. But when Eddie and Marcus almost kill a man, Marcus gets busted. Eddie stays quiet and continues on with his life, while Marcus is now facing time in prison. What do you like/dislike about it? This was a great book. The part I disliked the most was when Eddie didn't come out and tell the detectives that he was the shooter, letting Marcus get the blame while Eddie was home free. Who would enjoy reading it? Title: The Black Sheep
By: Yvonne Collins and Sandy Rideout
More Info: What is this book about? This book was about New York teenager Kendra Bishop, who applies to a family-swap reality show called "The Black Sheep" because her parents are bankers who would rather run marathons than be with her. She gets sent to sunny Cali to the Mulligan family: hippies who have six kids and a small house, but are dedicated to saving otters. It sounds like a good book already, doesn't it? She is being constantly harassed by the cameras and the show's producer, Judy, and is coming off as a horribe brat in all the episodes, but here's the kicker: she falls in love with her older "brother" Mitch. Can Kendra save sea otters, make up with her parents, and make a relationship work all while on reality TV? Well, I'm not going to tell you, if that's what you're waiting for. Read the book! What do you like/dislike about it? This book is right up there with Meg Cabot and Dairy Queen. One of you obsess-over teen romance/ humor books. One of those read-until-midnight books. One of the finish-in-three days books. One of those...GOOD BOOKS, okay? It was all-around fun... I loved every minute of it. Who would enjoy reading it? Call me sexist...but this is a girl book. It is CHICK lit. If you are not a CHICK (and that also applies to manly ladies) you will not enjoy this book. Howver, if you are a CHICK looking for HUMOR, ROMANCE, and REALITY TV WITHOUT THE TV, then this is the book for you. Review written by: Lauren, age 14, grade 9, Bellarmine Prep, Federal Way Library

Title: In the Hand of the Goddess
By: Tamora Pierce
More Info: What is this book about? This is the sequal to "Alanna the First Adventure", so in this book, Alanna was the Prince's squire, until she turned 18 and went throught the Ordeal to become a knight, still in disguise as a boy. She realizes that Prince Jonathan is in danger, so she slays his cousin, who is trying to kill him. What do you like/dislike about it? I like this book a lot because Alanna is disguised as a boy, yet she is in love with both the Prince and a theif called George. They both love her back, because, of course, they know she's a girl. I also love this book because, when Alanna is battling Prince Jonathan's would-be-future-murderer, Roger, Roger slashed her special corset that made her look like a boy, and everyone knew her gender. Who would enjoy reading it? People who enjoy knighthood, love stories, medieval times, Middle Ages or even people who fight for woman's rights. Toni can't put it down, he finds, until he knows just exactly what happed to Pelly D. What do you like/dislike about it? I loved the original concept and creativity of this book. It explores deep thoughts about the holocaust, greed and prejudice in a completely non-threatening way. Also, the society created in this novel is complex, frightening, fascinating, and all too true-sounding. Who would enjoy reading it? Teens who want a light but peridoxically, deep book. It addresses current issues in our culture - cloning, genetic enhancement, euthanaisa - in an easy-to -read format junior-highers can understand. Lois Lowry doesn't tell you what to think she makes you think. The Giver willl make you question your position on many current topics, and touch your heart at the same time. Title: The City of Ember
By: Jeanne Duprau
More Info: What is this book about? A city that exists in complete darkness without electirc lights is dying. The ancient generator is falling apart and the supplies are running out, two young kids must solve the mysterious message that will save their people from the dark. What do you like/dislike about it? The book reminded me a lot of the book "The Giver". The people are supplied with everything that they need and are assigned jobs at a certain age. The pure strangeness of their reality interests me, how their society is both like and unlike ours, how they have no phones but messengers instead. The plot is simple but the setting is what draws you in. Who would enjoy reading it? This book is a much easier read, young audiences (12-14) could probaly appreciate it, good story. Title: The Golden Compass
By: Philip Pullman
More Info: What is this book about? The first book in the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. The Gobblers are abroad - and they are stealing children. In every town, they disappear, and it's up to Lyra to find out what's happening to them. Using her alethiometer - a truth teller - she finds out - and it's so terrible, that without more help the children are doomed. What do you like/dislike about it? Lyra was faithful to her friends, and compassionate towards people or other things that were in danger. This book was very suspenseful and gripping - it held me captivated in a way that no book has for a long time. I will most definetely finish the trilogy and most likely read Pullman's other books as well. A great read for all adventure seekers! Who would enjoy reading it? All teens. Rating - 4.5 stars.
