Book Description
What is this book about? Chanrity Him recounts the tragedies she faced as she grew up in Cambodia and Thailand after the Communist Cambodians (Khmer Rouge) took over, sending everyone in Cambodia to various labor and concentration camps, much like the persecution of Jews in the 1930s and 40s in Eurpoe. She witnesses death firsthand as many of her family members perish. What do you like/dislike about it? I liked how this book was written in the present-tense. Combined with the vivid and graphic descriptions, I sometimes could witness what was happening from the author's point of view. Another result of the present tense writing that I liked was that this narration was more like a story, in that the plot built up more because everything wasn't told like it already happened. Who would enjoy reading it? I think both teenagers and adults would enjoy reading this book. It gives a sense of the tragedies and how Cambodians were treated by their fellow countrymen, when many people only know about the Holocaust in Europe.
