This blank-verse poetic narration is voiced by Eleanora Fagan, known to the world as blues singer Billie Holiday. Raised in poverty and frequently abandoned by her mother, young Eleanora's voice is her ticket to a life outside of prostitution and scrubbing the floors of rich people. Her unsuccessful searches for love, her career as the first black singer to front an all-white jazz band, and her emotional attachment to music is poignently told; her drug addiction, her fondness for abusive men, and other self-destructive behaviors are treated (inappropriately) lightly. The beautiful illustrations by Floyd Cooper highlight the poems, which are titled with the names of Billie Holiday tunes.
