Literacy*AmeriCorps, is a national service program
that provides literacy services to youth, adults and
families in communities throughout the United States.
Literacy*Americorps is part of the AmeriCorps network
of nation service programs that engages adults of all
ages and backgrounds in service to meet the nation’s
critical needs in education, public safety, health,
and the environment. AmeriCorps, the domestic version
of the Peace Corps, gives you an opportunity to apply
your skills toward helping others in your community.
Literacy*AmeriCorps is an 11-month national service
program requiring 1700 volunteer hours. Member volunteers
receive an $11,400 stipend, health care, valuable training
and experience, and a $4,725 education award issued
at completion of service to help pay student loans
or tuition. The program is directed nationally by the
Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council and operates in
six cities: Pittsburgh, PA; Dayton, OH; New Orleans,
LA; San Diego, CA; Seattle/King County, WA; West Palm
Beach, FL.

work experience in education or some kind of service
is helpful, and a willingness to learn and share your
skills is necessary. Applicants should be open to a team-based
model that includes group planning and reflection.
