Literacy*AmeriCorps sites vary from libraries and colleges, to multi-service day programs and county jails. Each site offers a literacy program promoting youth, adult or family literacy.

Casa Latina – 2 positions

Job title: CASA Latina ESL Program at the Day Workers Center

CASA Latina’s ESL Program at the Day Worker’s Center teaches English to Latino immigrant day laborers so that they can improve their employment opportunities. AmeriCorps members will teach from a well developed curriculum based upon the practical, interactive English the workers need to succeed in the work force. We offer two levels of ESL classes daily and serve over 300 students per year. Casa Latina’s ESL program is dynamic and rewarding. Spanish language skills required.

Job title: AmeriCorps ESL Program Assistant

The AmeriCorps ESL Program Assistant will serve recently arrived refugees by assisting in multi-level ESL classes (including pre-literate students), tutoring refuges individually or in small groups, and supporting volunteers to do the same. The AmeriCorps member will serve refugees from many different ethnicities alongside experienced ESL professionals. Desirable foreign language skills of Burmese, Kiswahili, Arabic, French, or Russian would be helpful.

The St. James ESL Program provides free English tutoring and citizenship services to 250 adult, low-income refugees and immigrants through out King County, especially groups that are critically underserved and have difficulty accessing services.

King County Correctional Facility – 2 positions
Job title: Education Coordinator

The KCCF site provides members with a challenging opportunity to reach an under-served and marginalized population inside the criminal justice system. Members teach, tutor, recruit and manage volunteer literacy tutors.

Job title: ESL/ABE Program Assistant

The member will provide ESL and ABE instruction in the classroom. Besides the basic core programs of ESL, ABE, and GED, the Basic Skills Program, Lake Washington Technical College offers family literacy, tutoring, workplace ESL, employment aid, college transition, and community volunteer/internship opportunities.

Job title: Citizenship and Civics Instructor

The Citizenship and Civics instructor teaches and coordinates, or assists in coordinating, Citizenship classes and tutoring, Talk Time conversation classes, the Conversation Partners program, and Community Engagement Workshops. The member will support volunteers and students from diverse backgrounds. Additional projects include editing the Bridge to Literacy newsletter, organizing and providing off-site instruction, and working with a team to plan events.

Job title: ESL instructor

The ESL instructor coordinates instruction for adult ESL students, including tutoring and classes. In addition to volunteer recruitment and support, the member will develop curriculum, tutor and/or teach ESL classes, recruit students and monitor their progress, and manage student and volunteer records. Additional projects include contributing to the Bridge to Literacy newsletter, organizing and providing off-site instruction, and working with a team to plan Community Engagement Workshops and events.

Job title: Education Coordinator

YouthTech and the Orion education programs, located in YouthCare’s Orion Center in downtown Seattle, provide homeless and runaway youth with education and employment training opportunities. YouthCare’s purpose is to provide young people with the skills and resources they need to ensure self-sufficiency and positive growth. These skills include literacy, education, and employment training. The member would teach and tutor youth in various academic subjects.

Job title: ESL Classroom tutor – Casa de los Amigos program

YouthCare’s Casa de los Amigos classroom, located on the second floor of YouthCare’s administration building in the University District, provides homeless unaccompanied refugee minors in the Seattle area with education and ESL classes. YouthCare’s mission and purpose is to serve homeless youth by giving them the skills and resources they need to ensure self-sufficiency, positive growth, and successful lives. In the Casa de los Amigos program, these skills include learning English as a second language. Spanish language skills are required.

The AmeriCorps member will tutor students and assist with volunteer recruitment.
Foreign language skills that are desirable are Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, Chinese, Tigrina, Amaharick, Oromo.

Job title: ESL Program Computer Instruction Specialist

For many immigrants and refugees, developing both English and gaining computer literacy skills are key to achieving self-sufficiency. The member will assist in providing ESL computer services through coordination and participation in the Computer for English and Wired for Learning programs at 2-3 library sites. The member will provide support to and be supported by a group of 25 to 35 dedicated volunteers. This position will support the ESL Program’s goal of providing services to promote equitable access to the benefits of technology.

Job title: ESL Program Support and Specialist

The AmeriCorps member will support The Seattle Public Library’s ESL Program efforts by providing ESL services through coordination and participation in the Talk Time program at 4-7 library sites. In this volunteer- driven program, the member will also provide support to and be supported by a group of 30 to 40 dedicated volunteers. This position will also support the planning and implementation of an ESOL Book Club.
Spanish or Southeast Asian language skills are desirable.

Job title: Basic Skills Tutor

YouthSource works with at-risk youth ages 16-24. We manage an on-site alternative education program for HS credit retrieval and GED preparation and testing. YouthSource also provides employment readiness training, job placements and support services. Vocational training in the information technology and construction industry is also an option available to youth through our Digital Bridge Technology Academy and YouthBuild programs. Members would teach and tutor students.

Job title: GED Instructor/Service Learning Coordinator

The Seattle Rotary Education Center is a drop-out prevention program that provides educational opportunities for youth and young adults ages 16-20. In collarboration with the Seattle Public Schools, SREC students work toward high school credit retrieval, prepare for high school graduation or pursue a GED certificate. The member would tutor and teach  in the classroom.

Job title: ABE and Literacy Tutor

The Basic and Transitional Studies Department strives to make education accessible and to empower adult learners to fortify their basic skill set. The goal is that the learners in our program cultivate life-long learning practices. The AmeriCorps member is an asset in this program as he/she will tutor ABE students with their math and writing skills, will be responsible for 2 Talk Times per week, will tutor ESL, will assist teachers in their classrooms, and will aid the Program Coordinator in placing and supporting volunteer tutors.

Multi-Service Center (MSC) is a non-profit, Community Action Partnership committed to assisting individuals and families achieve a greater level of self-sufficiency and self-determination. The Adult Education Program addresses this mission through educational services that help people achieve success at work, school and home. The AmeriCorps member would teach and tutor students in ESL, GED, and or ABE.

Cascadia Community College’s Adult Basic Education Program provides direct instruction to over 600 ABE, GED Prep, and ESL students a year. The AmeriCorps member is a valued team-member of the ABE program. The member would teach, tutor, and assist with testing.

Job title: AmeriCorps Literacy Coordinator

The Liteacy Coordinator will tutor and assist instructors in ESL/ABE/GED classrooms in order to help adult learners improve basic literacy skills; the LC will also coordinate a Speaker’s Bureau for the Seattle Literacy Consortium. In this role, the LC will identify, recruit, and train student ambassadors to write and then deliver speeches that are intended to educate and inform the community as well as provide basic information about all the SLC sites for potential students, volunteers and advocates.

Hopelink’s Eastside Literacy provides over 50 free English classes for more than 650 immigrant adults annually in North and East King County. A small staff works to support a large group of trained volunteers who teach ESL classes for students who have beginning or intermediate level English skills. The AmeriCorps member would recruit and support volunteers, teach adult ESL classes, perform lesson planning and measure student progress.

Job title: Books to Grow On Outreach Specialist

Literacy AmeriCorps members will train childcare providers in creating exciting, engaging, developmentally appropriate and culturally inclusive/sensitive literature-based programs that promote the early literacy skills preschool children need to enter school ready to learn. The Literacy AmeriCorps member visits each child care for 4 weeks to provide story times and early literacy training. Experience working with young children and/or background in early childhood education preferred.

Job title: KCLS Literacy AmeriCorps South Area

The KCLS Literacy AmeriCorps positions have teaching, volunteer recruitment, and community outreach components. The positions involve direct teaching with adult ESL learners, volunteer orientations, communication and coordination with branch library staff, coordination with immigrant and refugee agencies and community colleges. This program requires an applicant have transportation and can work a varied schedule.

The KCLS Literacy AmeriCorps positions have teaching, volunteer recruitment, and community outreach components.
