Newport Way Library
History of the Library
In 1964 members of the Eastgate Community Club formed a library committee to help bring a library to the Eastgate neighborhood. Soon thereafter the Charles Hutchins family donated an acre of land to the Community Club for the library project. In 1966 the Newport Way Library Association was formally established to work with the King County Library District towards the goal of bringing a community library to the people living south of Interstate 90.
The 1966 King County Library System bond issue provided funds for construction of the library; however, the Library District was unable to build on the Hutchins property as planned and purchased an alternate site from the Aldersgate United Methodist Church on historic Newport Way. The Newport Way Library was designed by Bassetti Architects and opened its doors on August 10th,1970.
The Newport Way Library Association deeded the original property donated by the Hutchins family to the King County Library District. The Library District later sold the Hutchins property, and proceeds from that sale continue to be used by the Newport Way Library Association in support of programs and collection needs of the Newport Way Library.
