April 2013
Schematic designs that were within the project budget were presented at a public meeting on March 26. Based on feedback from the public, KCLS presented a second schematic design to the City Council on April 15 for a larger building that exceeded the budget. The City Council approved the expanded project scope and budget at the Renton City Council Meeting on April 29, 2013. According to the Council's motion: schematic design is approved for a renovated replacement library over the Cedar River, approximately 19,500 gross square feet in size, for a maximum city contribution amount not to exceed $10.4 million; the guiding principles established for the preliminary design phase have been fulfilled; the Administration will be directed to proceed with retaining consultant(s) to conduct an independent review of the preliminary project budget, perform a project cost audit during the construction phase and report results back to the Committee of the Whole; and the KCLS architecture team will be asked to consider adding a second door that opens from the entrance airlock area directly onto the bridge.

February 2013
In conjunction with the City of Renton, KCLS and the consultant team are planning for a renovated library at the current site. Schematic design has begun and a public meeting is scheduled for March 26, 6:30pm at Renton Library.

August 2012
In conjunction with the City of Renton, KCLS is working on plans for the renovated library at its current site.

July 2012
The schematic designs for the new Renton Downtown Library continue to be reviewed by cost estimators. The project is on hold pending the outcome of a public vote on August 7 to determine if the Library remains over the Cedar River or moves to the new piazza location.

June 2012

May 2012
Progress continues on the planning and design process for the new Renton Downtown Library. The schematic designs continue to be reviewed by cost estimators.
