On the Water: Palisade Bay is the collaborative initiative of a group of engineers, architects, landscape architects, planners and students to imagine a "soft infrastructure" for the New York/New Jersey Upper Bay by developing interconnected infrastructures and landscapes which rethink the thresholds of water, land and city. The proposal is sited on the water, along the coastal edge and within the local communities. It presents a new coastal planning strategy which not only mitigates potential damage from storms but also provides new ground for recreation, ecologies, agriculture and urban development. With climate change and sea level rise acting as catalysts for this work, a quantitative analysis of dynamic systems serves as the foundation for this new soft infrastructure which both enriches the ecology of the urban estuary and creates a vibrant culture on the water. Research from this project is the inspiration for the exhibition Rising Currents: Projects for New York's Waterfront, opening at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in March 2010

"One day Millennium Boy decided to grab his hobo stick, his bandana, and his Swiss Army knife, bid his mom goodbye, and head off on a quest for adventure. He is soon joined by his best friend Steve (weapon: baseball bat), and the duo find themselves victors in a battle with two other adventure seekers, which automatically upgrades their weaponry (a crowbar and a steel chain are added to their arsenal)-- and on they trek until they meet the next inductee to their group, the muscle-bound Lash Penis. And then things start getting weird. Joe Daly's latest graphic novel mimics the narrative propulsion of a role playing game, and therein lies its-- and its author's-- genius. Onr jolly band of ne'er-do-wells journey[s] blithefully along, confronting a series of hilarious but increasingly hostile menaces, accumulating points and weapons, eventually recruiting Nedgirl the Archer, who adds a little female energy to their improvisatory family of happy-go-lucky hooligans"--P. Most of the projects in this book consist of no more than a few key spaces, in many cases just a single space. They are united only by their compact nature, the pleasure that they can provide and the intelligence that they embody. A brief introduction is followed by five thematic chapters: Public Realm, Community Spaces, On the Move, Compact Living and Extra Space. The 53 case studies include a park bench that transforms into a shelter for the homeless in Australia, an inflatable treetop structure for rainforest observation, a portable house for victims of hurricane Katrina, a transportable church in Finland and a suspended office in France."--Publisher's websit

"It is rare to encounter an architect who consistently and rigorously seeks to reduce space to its most basic forms, while remaining acutely sensitive to the human experience of that space. For over two decades, Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen has created a series of exquisite buildings and residences, from the Low Countries to New York, with profoundly elemental spaces enriched by a refined palette of materials. The results are at once sublime and rich, minimal yet tactile." "This is the complete monograph of Van Duysen's work, including his domestic architecture, office and commercial spaces, as well as furniture and decorative objects for such leading international manufacturers as B&B Italia, Poliform and Swarovski. Over thirty projects are presented in detail, each with a project profile, many accompanied by specially commiss ioned photographs taken by Alberto Piovano, along with a complete project chronology. Collected together in a large-scale format, the book includes an introduction by noted architecture critic Marc Dubois and tributes by architects David Adjaye, Alberto Campo Baeza and Michael Gabellini, fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester and furniture designer Patricia Urouiola, all of whom provide fascinating insights into Van Duysen's inspirational output."--BOOK JACKE

Drawings by the great Italian Mannerist painter and poet Agnolo Bronzino (1503-1572) are extremely rare. This important and beautiful publication brings together for the first time nearly all of the sixty drawings attributed to this leading draftsman of the 16th century. Each drawing is illustrated in color, discussed in detail, and shown with many comparative photographs. Bronzino's technical virtuosity as a draftsman and his mastery of anatomy and perspective are vividly apparent in each stroke of the chalk, pen, or brush. The younger generations of Florentine artists particularly admired Bronzino for his technical virtuosity as a painter, and Giorgio Vasari praised him for his powers as a disegnatore (designer and draftsman

Deadpool wants to be an X-Man. And he's not going to let anyone stand in his way-- not even the X-Men! When Cyclops announces to the world that the X-Men are constructing an island haven for mutants, Wade Wilson decides it's time for him to join the revolution. But he soon finds out that big guns and a healing factor don't an X-Man make. So when the father of the mutant Mercury lies to the press by telling them his daughter is being held captive on Utopia, Deadpool decides he can finally make the X-Men love him-- really, really love him-- by assassinating Mercury's father. Will Wade succeed and single-handedly set back mutant/human relations 50 years? Will he ever become an X-Man? Will he finally get some play from that smoking-hot chick with the guns and the Dalmatian spot over her eye? What was that first question agai

The goal of maintaining equity by using existing elements in new ways and combining them with new elements is akin to the task of g2srecyclingg3s In other words how do designers improve and recreate identities without throwing out the usable stuff that is makes up the existing brand? Recycling and Redesigning Logos demonstrates the strategies and processes of successful redesigns and shows readers how to build on the equity the brand already retains to create a fresh look. The case studies feature before and afters of the logos and discuss why the redesign was necessary and demonstrate how to reuse, reformat and build on the ingredients, materials and essence that is already ther
