KCLS Service Center

About the King County Library System Service Center

Site: 960 Newport Way NW, Issaquah, Washington (between Locust (paved trail) and Juniper Street; behind Target Store in Issaquah (Commons Shopping Center).

Building Size: Approximately 80,000 square feet.

Architect: The Miller/Hull Partnership

Contractor: Berschauer Phillips Construction Company

Building Highlights:

  • Provide space for Library System's support operations for 42 branches, including Shipping, Traveling Library Center, Collection Management Services, Information Technology Services, Administration, etc.
  • Building will house approximately 200 staff members, and provide space for training and meetings with staff from branch libraries.
  • Building will feature meeting room for special programs and public use.
Funding: A new Service Center building was originally included in the Library System's 1988 bond issue. The project was delayed so that the planning efforts and funding could go to building the libraries first, followed by this processing center.

The Service Center building, currently located in Seattle, needs extensive repair and updating to accommodate processing techniques, storage, and training. In addition, there is the desire to be located within the service district and closer to the 40 branches and libraries in institutional settings. After studying numerous sites in the I-90 corridor, it was determined that the site on Newport Way best suited the District's needs.

The Service Center was recently sold and funds will be used to offset the cost of this new facility; construction cost is estimated at $10 million.
