Adaptive Equipment at Your Library
Assistive devices and software to help accommodate individuals with disabilities are available for use at the library.
Computers equipped with text-enlarging (MAGic) and screen-reading (JAWS) software are available for reservation at the following libraries:
MAGic is a software solution ideally suited for computer users with low vision. MAGic lets you magnify your computer screen to various enlargements, enhance the mouse and cursor to help track the location of the pointer and cursor on the screen, and apply color enhancements to let you change how colors display on your screen.
JAWS is a software solution ideally suited for computer users with vision impairments or those who are more successfull hearing, rather than reading. JAWS reads information on your screen using synthesized speech. Using JAWS commands, you can easily use programs, edit documents, and read web pages.
- While on the Internet, press CTRL and + or -
- While on the Internet, or in a document (Word or Excel), change the zoom level in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Reserve a Computer (PC)
Reserve a PC online (you must have a library card number and pin number) or call your library for assistance in reserving a PC. To reserve a PC online with text-enlarging and screen-reading software, select the computer with "ADA" in the PC name or PC type. It is advisable to reserve the computer ahead of time to ensure its availability and prevent having to wait.

Special Collections
Audiobooks
Previously known as “books on tape,” CD Audiobooks are available at all KCLS libraries. Cassette Audiobooks are no longer purchased by the library, but a portion of the collection has been retained in our Just In Time (non-public) facility. Patrons can place holds on specific titles.
eBooks
Reading software can enlarge text or convert text to speech on eBooks, which are downloaded to a computer or electronic reader. The following links provide options for enlarging text and overall readability:
Another way to listen to a book is via a digital audio device or mp3 player. Checked out just like a book, eAudio players are complete books on an audio device. eAudio books can also be downloaded on personal computers, laptops, mp3 players, and phones.
Large Print Books
Print books with large text are available at all KCLS libraries. Patrons can place holds on specific titles.
DVDs
Available at all KCLS libraries, DVDs offer closed captioning or subtitle features. Descriptive audio is also available for people with visual disabilities. Video cassettes are no longer purchased by the library, but a portion of the collection has been retained in our Just In Time (non-public) facility. Patrons can place holds on specific titles.

Accommodations for library events and classes may be made by contacting the library prior to the program.

KCLS uses the the Telecommunications Relay Service (711)
for individuals who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or have speech difficulties.
The Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) permits persons
who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or have speech difficulties to
use the telephone system via a text telephone (TTY) or other device to call persons with or without such disabilities.
