How Install & Use the LibraryLookup Tool

LibraryLookup is a small bit of JavaScript (a “bookmarklet”) that you add to your Bookmarks or Favorites. If you are curious if the King County Library System carries a book that you find at one of many online retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, isbn.nu, All Consuming, and local online stores such as Powell's, Elliot Bay Books, and Third Place Books, you may click the bookmark and it will check the KCLS catalog using the ISBN.

Further information about the LibraryLookup Tool is available at http://weblog.infoworld.com/udell/stories/2002/12/11/librarylookup.html

Please note:
The LibraryLookup Tool was not created by the King County Library System and may not work on all platforms. KCLS regrets that it cannot provide technical support on the use of this tool.

Please Note:
The bookmarklet is generally accurate, but sometimes makes mistakes. If you suspect that KCLS carries the item you’re looking for, double-check at http://catalog.kcls.org. For example, the bookmarklet generally looks for hard-back editions of books, but KCLS may own only the paperback.

Here’s how it works:

1. Go to http://weblog.infoworld.com/udell/stories/2002/12/11/librarylookupGenerator.html

2. In the Base URL line, type “http://catalog.kcls.org” (no quotes).

3. In the Library Name line, type “King County Library System” (no quotes).

4. For Vendor, select the Innovative radio button.

5. Click the Build your own LibraryLookup bookmarklet! button.

6. A confirmation page appears. To test the bookmarklet, click the “here” link on the first line of the confirmation page. If the bookmarklet was created correctly, it will find a book called “Rubber stamp carving” in the KCLS catalog. If you receive an error message, return to the URL in step 1, and redo steps 2-5.

7. Click the Back button to return to the confirmation page. The bookmarklet is the text that says “King County Library System” (or whatever you entered in Step 3). To add the bookmarklet to your Favorites/Bookmarks, right-click it and choose “Add to Favorites” or drag it to your Link tool bar.

8. To use the bookmarklet, search for a book in an online bookseller such as Amazon, B&N, isbn.nu, All Consuming, or local stores such as Powell's, Elliot Bay Books, or Third Place Books. (Other online retailers may work too, if they list an ISBN on their records.) Open the full record for the book you searched for. Select the “King County Library System.” link on your tool bar or your Favorites, and the bookmarklet will search the KCLS catalog for that item.

9. The bookmarklet is for a specific edition of a book. You could try linking from a different edition such as a hardback or you The scripts here are based on Jon Udell's LibraryLookup. They will not work for all browsers, but should work for recent IE & Mozilla browsers.

If you select an ISBN or book title with your mouse and click on the "KCLS Search" link, your selection will be entered into the KCLS search page. Or if there is an ISBN in your browser's current web address (at the top of your browser), this script should be able to find it and enter it into the KCLS search page. Online places like Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, isbn.nu, etc, oftentimes have the ISBN as part of the web address.

If the search comes up empty or appears to be wrong, be sure to double-check at http://catalog.kcls.org. For instance, the ISBN may be for the hardback edition of the book, while KCLS may own only the paperback version.

Test the links below by selecting one of these ISBN's or titles below (or not), and then clicking on one of them. (Don't select the author's name, only ISBN or title.) When you have found the script you like best, drag and drop the link onto your web browser's Navigation/Link Bar near the top of the browser.
