Computer Booking & Printing Policy

Printing from KCLS computers is a service, which is offered free for library patrons. It is an important part of the KCLS Mission to offer “free, open, and equal” access to library services. The Board has maintained this policy for the life of the Library System and resisted all initiatives that would require charging for any service. The library is the one place in the community that people of all economic capabilities may use.

Computer Booking

• Each KCLS community library sets an individual daily time limit for patrons based on local demand and machine availability. Library patrons may use up to maximum minutes per day on the computers at each site depending on site time limits. The first booking must be used before another can be scheduled.

• Children’s stations are permanently filtered for Internet. Children 6 and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

• Reservations are held for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes the computer becomes available. A missed booking counts as 10 minutes of the time available (total) each day.

• Patrons who have booked the computer during the libraries’ last open hour may use the workstation for up to 55 minutes. Computer workstations will automatically log off at 5 minutes prior to closing.

• Patrons may book a computer up to 2 days in advance at any library. They may book onsite or telephone to reserve a computer at any library, or book from the KCLS Web site.

• These policies, and the KCLS Rules of Conduct must be observed. If they are disregarded, patrons may be "suspended" from computer usage for a day or more.

Computer Printing for Networked Print Management

• Most workstation printing is directed to a network printer.

• Patrons may claim their print jobs, using their library card number and PIN, at a Print Release station.

• Patrons with a KCLS library card may print up to 75 printed pages per week; a week being Sunday through Saturday.

• Temporary user cards allow 50 prints per week, and One-Time-User numbers allow 25 per use.

• Libraries with networked color printing allow up to 10 pages from color printers per week. This number is deducted from the 75 per week total limit. (Currently includes Issaquah, Covington, Bellevue, Federal Way 320th, Kent and Burien.)

• Libraries with staff color printers may offer patrons limited copies as set by the individual library.

• Printing from the KCLS catalog and online databases are included in the 75 per week print allotment.

• No network printing is provided for patrons’ wireless laptops. Patrons must save to a disk, then use a KCLS workstation to do the print job.

• Staff does not access printers to change paper for “special” printing projects for patrons. Staff will assist patrons to find commercial printing businesses that provide these services.
