Saving Files on KCLS Computers
Need to save your work on a KCLS computer? You can save files temporarily in the My Documents folder on the library computer, but they will be permanently erased at the end of your session. For longer-term storage, consider:
- saving your file(s) to a USB drive
- emailing the file(s) to yourself as an attachment
- uploading file(s) to a cloud storage service such as Windows Live SkyDrive or Google Docs
- creating and saving file(s) using web apps offered by cloud services
Note: The “cloud” is the Internet. Free cloud services, such as Windows Live SkyDrive and Google Docs, offer long-term file(s) storage and web-based software to create, edit and store file(s) on the Internet.
Uploading documents to the cloud from the My Documents folder:- save your file(s) to the KCLS My Documents folder
- login to your cloud service and upload your file(s) from the My Documents folder
- access your files from any PC or smart phone with Internet connection
Creating documents in the cloud
Cloud services include web-based software, or web apps, to create, edit and share documents directly in the browser. These files can be exported to more robust desktop software such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel.
- login to your cloud service account
- start a document on a web app; auto saves to cloud storage
- access your files from any PC with Internet connection, or export to desktop software
Please note: Windows Live SkyDrive and Google Docs include online software for creating and editing documents. Editing files in Google Docs is limited to files created or converted into the Google Docs file format. You can upload Office file formats (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), but you may have to download the file to your local computer, edit and re-upload to Google Docs for long-term storage. To download documents from Google Docs you can right click on the document name in the document list, or you can open the document and choose download from the file menu.
